How to Import Wholesale Perfume from Dubai to Nigeria

Nigeria is one of the largest perfume markets in West Africa, and most of the stock on Lagos and Kano shelves passes through Dubai. The reason is simple arithmetic: buying at USD 1.22 to 5.72 per unit ex-works leaves room for freight, duty and a working retail margin in naira.

The hard part is not finding a Dubai seller. It is finding one who will still stock your winning fragrance when you reorder. This guide covers supplier selection, a realistic first order, landed cost, documents and the mistakes that cost money.

First decide what kind of supplier you need

Dubai has manufacturers, licensed distributors and general traders. Only a manufacturer or brand owner can promise product continuity and discuss territory rights, because they control what gets produced.

• Ex-works price - from USD 1.22 per unit on qualifying 30 ml lines, USD 5.72 on 100 ml.
• Preparation - 3 to 5 working days on stocked lines, 3 to 4 weeks made to order.
• Payment - 50% deposit, 50% before dispatch. No credit terms on a first order.

Spread those 300 units across 12 to 20 fragrances rather than concentrating them. The first order is market research you can sell, not a stock-up.

Calculating landed cost in Lagos

Ex-works price is the start of the calculation, not the end. Add:

• Freight - air freight suits a 300-unit test order; sea freight to Apapa or Tin Can only makes sense at container volumes.
• Customs duty and VAT - rates depend on HS classification and change. Get the current position from your licensed clearing agent before ordering.
• NAFDAC registration - cosmetic and fragrance products imported into Nigeria are subject to NAFDAC requirements. This is the importer's responsibility and can take time, so start it early rather than after the goods land.
• Clearing fees, terminal charges, inland transport and breakage.

Divide the total naira cost by the number of bottles. That per-bottle number is what your wholesale and retail prices must cover.

Three mistakes that cost Nigerian importers money

Paying in full before dispatch to a supplier you have never met. Our terms are 50/50 for a reason. If a supplier demands 100% upfront on a first order, ask why.

Ignoring NAFDAC until the container arrives. Demurrage at Apapa is expensive. Start registration before you place the order.

Comparing invoice prices instead of bottles. A cheaper unit price frequently means less liquid, weaker concentration or a flimsier box. Confirm millilitres, concentration and packaging first.

Building a range that moves in Nigeria

Balance across fresh, floral, oriental and woody families. Keep two price points so a customer who cannot afford a 100 ml still buys a 30 ml. Order testers - in Balogun or any open market, the sale closes when the customer smells the bottle, not when they see it.
