Wholesale Perfume from Dubai to Ghana: A Buyer's Guide

Ghanaian traders buy perfume in Dubai for one reason: the landed cost per bottle is low enough to hold real margin in Accra, Kumasi or Takoradi. The difficulty is not finding a seller. It is finding one that will still have your best-selling bottle when you come back in four months.

Start with the supplier type, not the price

Dubai has manufacturers, distributors and general traders. Only the first two can guarantee you will be able to reorder the same product. A general trader sells what happens to be in the market that month, which is fine for a one-off container and poor for building a brand in Ghana.

What a first order to Ghana looks like

• Minimum order - 300 units, mixed freely across brands, fragrances and sizes. You are not forced into 300 of one bottle.
• Ex-works price - from USD 1.22 per unit on qualifying 30 ml lines, USD 5.72 on 100 ml.
• Preparation - 3 to 5 working days on stocked lines, 3 to 4 weeks if made to order.
• Payment - 50% deposit, 50% before dispatch. No credit terms on a first order.
• Handover - a freight consolidator sits about 120 metres from our warehouse in Murshid Bazar, Deira.

A 300-unit test order is deliberately small. The purpose is to learn which fragrances sell in your specific market before you commit capital to a container.

Working out your landed cost in Accra

Never compare suppliers on ex-works price alone. Build the full number:

• Ex-works unit price from the quotation.
• Freight - air is fast and expensive; sea to Tema is far cheaper per unit but adds several weeks. For 300 units, air often makes sense; for a container, sea always does.
• Duty and VAT at Tema or Kotoka - rates depend on classification and change. Confirm the current position with your clearing agent before you order, not after the goods arrive.
• Clearing agent fees, transport inland, and shrinkage.

Divide the total by the number of bottles. That figure, not the invoice price, is what your Ghanaian retail price has to cover.

• Airway bill or bill of lading from your forwarder

Two mistakes that kill first-time importers

Buying too deep on an untested SKU. A 300-unit order spread across 15 fragrances teaches you what Ghana buys. A 300-unit order of one bottle teaches you nothing and may leave you holding stock for a year.

Comparing prices without comparing bottles. A cheaper quote often means a smaller fill, a weaker concentration or thinner packaging. Confirm millilitres, concentration and box quality before you decide anything on price.

Building a range that sells in Ghana

Balance the assortment across fresh, floral, oriental and woody families rather than buying to your own taste. Keep at least two price points so a customer who cannot afford the 100 ml can still leave with a 30 ml. Order testers - in an open market or a shop, letting a customer smell the bottle is what closes the sale.
